A canyon so remote that winter seals it entirely from the outside world. The only way in is walking a frozen river. Sofia spent 5 days here in February 2023 and calls it the most humbling landscape she has ever stood in.
I stood on the frozen Zanskar River at 4am with a headlamp and −28°C pressing through every layer I owned, and all I could think was: “nobody I know has ever been here.” That feeling is why I travel. This guide has everything I wish someone had given me before I went.
What Exactly is Zanskar Valley?
Zanskar is a high-altitude river valley buried deep in the Zanskar sub-range of the Himalayas, in the union territory of Ladakh in northern India. It sits at an average elevation of 3,500 to 4,400 metres above sea level and is flanked on all sides by peaks that push above 6,000 metres.
For roughly six months of the year — October through April — the only road connecting Zanskar to the rest of the world, the Pensi La pass, is completely buried under snow. The valley becomes one of the most isolated inhabited places on Earth. Around 14,000 people live here permanently, mostly in scattered villages along the Zanskar and Stod rivers, in villages like Padum, Karsha, Zangla and Pishu.
In winter, locals historically crossed the frozen Zanskar River on foot — a route they called the Chadar, meaning “sheet” (of ice). This route, which threads through a narrow ice-walled gorge, has now become famous among serious trekkers as the Chadar Trek — arguably the most dramatic winter trek in Asia.

It’s genuinely untouched
Despite growing awareness, Zanskar remains extraordinarily remote. The Chadar Trek permits only ~5,000 trekkers per season across the entire valley. Compare that to Everest Base Camp, which sees over 40,000 trekkers a year. On my visit in February 2023, I went entire days without seeing another tourist.
The landscapes are unlike anything else in India
The combination of a frozen river canyon, towering Himalayan peaks, deep cobalt skies, and ancient Buddhist monasteries perched on cliff faces creates a visual intensity that photographs cannot capture. The light in winter — low, golden, bouncing off ice and snow — is extraordinary.
The culture is ancient and still living
Zanskari people follow Tibetan Buddhism. The monasteries here — Karsha, Phugtal (which is carved directly into a cliff face and accessible only on foot), and Stongdey — contain centuries-old murals, butter lamps that have burned continuously for generations, and monks who live according to rhythms entirely disconnected from modern life.
Phugtal Monastery — the world’s most dramatic monastery
This deserves its own mention. Phugtal Gompa is built into a natural cave in a sheer cliff above the Tsarap River. It is only reachable on foot — a 2-day trek from Padum or a long day-hike from a road-accessible point. Dating to the 12th century, it houses around 70 monks. It looks like it was dreamed rather than built.
Visit Phugtal at dawn when the butter lamps are being lit. The combination of ancient chanting, warm lamp light against cold stone, and the cliff dropping away to the river below is one of the most affecting experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world.
The people are genuinely warm
Zanskari hospitality is extraordinary. I was invited into homes for butter tea and tsampa (roasted barley flour) repeatedly. Nobody tried to sell me anything. People were curious about me, not because I was a tourist to be monetised, but because they rarely see outsiders. That dynamic feels increasingly rare in travel.

How to Actually Reach Zanskar Valley
This is where most people give up planning — because Zanskar is genuinely difficult to reach. But it’s not impossible. Here’s exactly how to do it.
Step 1 — Fly to Leh
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh (LUH) is your gateway. Direct flights operate from Delhi (1h 15min), Mumbai (2h 30min), Chandigarh, and Srinagar. Book early — Leh flights sell out fast in season, and winter seats are very limited. Budget ₹5,000–₹12,000 return from Delhi.
Leh sits at 3,500m. Do NOT travel onwards to Zanskar (which is higher) for at least 2–3 full days after arriving. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is serious and people have died ignoring this. Rest, hydrate, eat light, avoid alcohol.
Step 2 — Leh to Padum (Summer: Jun–Sep)
When the Pensi La pass (4,400m) is snow-free, you can drive from Leh to Padum in 7–9 hours on a dramatic mountain road via Kargil. Shared jeeps (₹800–₹1,200/seat) depart from Leh bus stand. Private jeeps cost ₹6,000–₹9,000. This is a breathtaking drive — mountain passes, glaciers, river valleys. Prepare for bone-rattling roads in sections.
Step 3 — Winter Access: The Chadar Trek (Jan–Feb)
In winter the road is closed. The Chadar Trek — walking the frozen Zanskar River for 105km — becomes the only way in on foot. Trekkers enter from Chilling (reachable by jeep from Leh in 1.5 hours) and walk to Zanskar over 5–9 days. This requires a licensed guide, permits, proper gear, and ideally prior trekking experience at altitude.

You need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Zanskar. Get it at the DC office in Leh (same-day, ₹20 + ₹50 environmental fee). Foreign nationals need to register at FRRO or obtain permits through a licensed tour operator — the process takes 1–2 days.
When to Visit Zanskar — Month by Month
Sofia’s Recommendation
February for the Chadar Trek — the ice is at its thickest and most stable (usually), the light is golden and dramatic, and the valley feels utterly otherworldly. July–August for a cultural visit — the Zanskar Festival (Ladakh Festival week) brings traditional music, archery and polo to Padum, and all the monasteries and villages are accessible by road.
Sofia’s 5-Day Zanskar Itinerary
This is the itinerary I followed in February 2023 for the Chadar Trek. Adapt it based on your fitness, season, and time.
Arrive in Leh, check into your guesthouse, and do nothing strenuous. Walk slowly around the market area, visit Shanti Stupa at sunset (gentle uphill walk), eat local food, drink plenty of water. Collect your Inner Line Permit from the DC office. Brief your guide and confirm your gear.
Drive 1.5 hours from Leh to Chilling village. Strap on crampons and step onto the Zanskar River. The first section of the Chadar is the most awe-inspiring — the gorge closes around you within 20 minutes and you are entirely enclosed by canyon walls and ice. Camp on ice or at a cave shelter. Temperature: −20°C to −28°C overnight.
The gorge deepens. You will cross sections of thin ice, walk along carved-out ledges above the river where the ice has broken, and see frozen waterfalls suspended on canyon walls. The silence — broken only by deep ice groans — is profound. Your guide will read the ice constantly. Trust them completely.
Reach Nerak — a village of about 10 families — and the absolute highlight: a frozen 40-metre waterfall, blue-white and perfectly still, hanging above the river. The village is barely reachable even in summer. Stay in a local home for the night — your host will cook tsampa and serve butter tea. One of the warmest evenings of my travelling life.
Return along the same river route (ice conditions change daily, so the return is never identical). Emerge at Chilling by mid-afternoon, drive back to Leh in the golden hour light. Eat the biggest meal of your life. You have earned it. Many trekkers extend to 7–9 days to reach Padum — if time allows, do it.
Where to Stay in Zanskar
Forget luxury hotels. They don’t exist here, and that’s the point. Zanskar’s accommodation is authentic, cheap, and gives you direct access to local life.
In Leh (before/after your trip)
Stay in the old town area — guesthouses run by Ladakhi families are far better than the newer tourist hotels. Expect to pay ₹600–₹1,800/night for a clean, warm room with meals. The Shanti Guest House, Oriental Guest House, and Dragon Guest House area all have excellent options.
On the Chadar Trek (winter)
You sleep on the ice or in natural cave alcoves along the river. Your tour operator provides insulated sleeping bags, thermarests, and camping gear. At Nerak and a few other points, basic homestay shelter is available. This is not glamping — temperatures drop to −35°C overnight. Your sleeping bag rating matters enormously.
In Padum (summer)
The main town of Zanskar has a handful of guesthouses — the Ibex Hotel and Snowland Guest House are reliable. Homestays in surrounding villages like Karsha and Zangla offer a far more authentic experience for ₹400–₹800/night including meals.
Chadar Trek slots are limited by permit to roughly 5,000 per season. Reputable operators like Rimo Expeditions, Himalayan Canyoning, and Zanskar Trekking fill up months in advance. Do NOT arrive in Leh in January hoping to find a guide last-minute.
What to Eat in Zanskar
Zanskar food is simple, warming, and completely unforgettable in context. After a day on frozen ice, a bowl of thukpa feels like the best thing ever cooked.
How Much Does Zanskar Cost?
Zanskar is inexpensive once you’re there. The biggest cost is the trek operation (for Chadar) and flights to Leh. Here’s the full breakdown:
Budget traveller (summer, road access): ₹18,000–₹30,000 for 7 days all-in from Delhi. Chadar Trek (winter): ₹45,000–₹85,000 for 7–9 days from Delhi. Both are extraordinary value for what is genuinely one of the world’s most remote experiences.
For UK, US & Middle East readers
Visa & Permit Information
For Indian citizens
No visa required. You need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) which costs ₹20 plus a ₹50 environment fee. Get it at the DC office in Leh (open Mon–Sat, 10am–4pm) on the same day. Carry 3 passport-size photos and a copy of your Aadhar/passport. It’s a straightforward 30-minute process.
For UK citizens
India e-Visa available online at indianvisaonline.gov.in — apply at least 4–7 days before travel. Tourist e-Visa costs ~$25–$80 depending on duration (30-day single entry, or 1-year/5-year multiple entry). On arrival in Leh, apply for the ILP either at the DC office or through your tour operator (who can process it on your behalf).
For US citizens
Same as UK — India e-Visa online. US passport holders qualify for 10-year multiple-entry tourist visa to India (~$100). Apply at least 4 days in advance. ILP process in Leh is the same.
For Middle East residents (UAE, Saudi, Oman, Qatar etc.)
Indian citizens living in GCC countries use the same ILP process. Non-Indian passport holders from the Middle East apply for India Tourist Visa through the Indian embassy or online e-Visa portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Indian passport holders in GCC do not need a separate India visa — just the ILP.
Certain areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) require an additional Protected Area Permit. Check current requirements with your tour operator before travelling — regulations can change. Most core Zanskar trek routes do NOT require PAP as of 2024, but verify this closer to your travel date.
What to Pack — The Complete List
Packing for Zanskar is not like packing for any other Indian destination. In winter especially, under-packing is dangerous. Here is exactly what I brought.
Essential Winter Gear (Chadar Trek)
- Sleeping bag rated to −40°C (do not compromise on this)
- Thermarest or insulating sleeping mat (ground is ice)
- Crampons and micro-spikes (usually provided by operator)
- Trekking poles with large powder baskets
- Balaclava, 2 pairs wool socks, liner gloves + expedition mitts
- Merino wool base layers (top and bottom, 2 sets)
- Mid-layer fleece + insulated down jacket (700 fill minimum)
- Waterproof, windproof hard shell jacket and trousers
- Insulated trekking boots (rated to −30°C)
- UV protection sunglasses (glacier light is intense)
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm (sun + cold = savage)
- Headlamp + extra lithium batteries (alkaline dies in cold)
Health & Safety Essentials
- Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness — consult your doctor
- Basic first aid kit including blister treatment
- Pulse oximeter (monitor blood oxygen at altitude)
- Emergency whistle and mirror signal
- Cash in INR — no ATMs in Zanskar, limited in Leh
- Downloaded offline maps (Maps.me or OsmAnd, Zanskar region)
- Satellite communicator (SPOT or Garmin inReach) for Chadar Trek
Cotton clothing of any kind (kills in cold and wet conditions). Expensive camera equipment without proper cold-weather protection (batteries fail below −10°C). Expectations of WiFi, hot showers, or anything resembling modern convenience. That’s the whole point.
